I quite suck at this blog thing, but I’ve just been so busy lately. I’m going back to Belgium in one week, have a whole bunch of photo’s I still have to print, and the saying goodbye part to everyone here isn’t making it any easier. Besides that I’m doing an exposition right now, here in Toluca (for the Mexicans: Larranaga Fotografos, Rayon y Alvarez).

So, some other pics I made while travelling through Mexico one month ago.

It’s been a while, but I’ve been working all week long to finish all the photos of the ‘Ruta Maya’, so now it’s time to start posting something again.

I’ll start with three pictures I took in Chiapas, the poorest, but also one of the most beautiful states of Mexico. We had the chance to visit a little village around San Cristobal de las Casas, where the ‘indigena’ still make the traditional clothing and souvenirs, to sell them to the tourists. Hard to see, but the peope were just so nice to us…

A lot of film

I’m leaving to the Riviera Maya (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riviera_Maya) on wednesday, so I won’t post anything the upcoming three weeks. Went buying film last week in Mexico City for my trip, and afterwards I really felt like a little boy that gets new toys from his parents, so I made some pics of it. I love film, too bad though that it’s so expensive…

I made this photo’s with my Sony A200 and Minolta 50mm f1.7. I am going to try some color film as well, Fuji Reala in this case. At first I wanted to buy Fuji Velvia, untill I asked for the price and they told me that it costed 175 peso’s for one roll (more than 10 euro’s). Reala seems like a nice alternative, since it’s not that expensive…

About my gear: you see a Minolta 7000i and a Minolta 7xi, a Tokina 28-70 f2.8 lens and a Minolta 70-210 f4 lens (‘the Beercan’). You don’t see: a Minolta 50mm f1.7 lens, a Minolta 3600 flash and a Sony A200 (which I’m not going to take with me to the Riviera Maya though).

And to end this post, a photo that I made at the beginning of my year Mexico, a photo of my Mexican ‘grandfather’, Don Juvencio Larrañaga, who is a photographer as well (actually, he started the family business, the studio, and is a well known and respected photographer here in Mexico).

In 1968, Mexican students struck for a couple of months in order to obtain better rights for students in the public universities. In Toluca, the strike began in the faculty of medicine, where only a few students were able to provoke a major student movement among the others. Today, 43 years later, ‘el Centro cinematografico de Metepec’, is making a movie about those days, about Mexico – and above all Toluca – in ’68. I went to take a look the day they were filming in the faculty of medicine.

Judas

It’s been a while, I’m sorry for that, but I’ve just been really busy. I did my first wedding as a second photographer two weeks ago, have been developing and photoshopping days and days to finish those pictures, went to the volcano where I took some great landscapes (will post those later), and on saturday I went to shoot some pics at the ‘burning of the judas’. Once a year, the people of Toluca and all the little towns around the city gather on the main square to burn their ‘Judas’. Those so called ‘Judas’ symbolise their fears, and the evil. They burn them, and let them explode. Beautiful to see, a pity though that they burn all of them, because they are quite beautiful.

The mime artist

We did some shooting with a group of mime artist last week, didn’t take a lot of pictures though, but of the few photos I made, this one was definitely worth it (for me).
